Disruptive technologies are putting huge value at stake across all sectors globally. No country or industry will be left unaffected. Six tech trends in particular will open up new opportunities and pose new challenges.
An opportunity to create value out of disruption
To grow and thrive in the digital economy, businesses need to reinvent how they work and be more connected than ever before — a large part of the digital value creation is to be found at the intersection between connected businesses, tech start-ups, universities, government, and customers. This increased cooperation takes the form of digital ecosystems that make it possible to reap the cost, time, and quality rewards of the digital age. For example, interoperability is required for 40% of the potential value across IoT applications and systems. Promising digital ecosystems are emerging in Sweden and if properly nurtured, they could create more than SEK 850 billion a year from 2025.

Six factors are essential for strong digital ecosystems
Sweden has a strong starting position, with several promising digital ecosystems
What does a digital ecosystem need?
Traffic accidents reduced by 90% with sensor technology
Reduced queues and freed up public spaces with connected vehicles and smart infrastructure
Increased mobility for all citizens
Daily time savings of ~1h
Quick and cheap home delivery options
Reduced transportation costs with autonomous venicles
Emission free and quieter cities
“Peer-to-peer” – carpooling solutions
Transport: An SEK 75–100 billion opportunity
Transport
—
Dedicated effort to foster transport specific competence within automation and digitalization
Encourage the establishment of tech startups in the transportation sector
Encourage further cooperation across the entire value chain, e.g. tech companies, transportation companies, retailers, government and academia
Establish permanent test driving areas in public traffic
Scale up pilots and real life experimentation to cover entire cities
Work with proactive updates of laws and regulations and coordinate internationally to establish Sweden as a lead nation
Build policy labs to test laws adapted to new technology solutions
Incentivize and encourage the public to use new transportation solutions
City planning should be based on future technology and transport solutions
WHAT WILL IT TAKE? TOP PRIORITIES FOR ACTION
Technological changes across the Transportation industry
Vehicle-related changes
1 Including value from Autonomous Vehicles, Connectivity and Internet of Things
Peer-to-peer sharing of autonomous vehicles can reduce transportation costs by 30-70% IoT and fleet management can enable optimized usage of vehicles and reducing waste
